Which Flag is Next?

There is mass hysteria moving otherwise intelligent people to do things they never would do if they thought it through.

The Confederate flag is now, for many, a thing of the past. Oh, no doubt, hate groups will wave it, Constitutionalists will wave it, and Southerners will probably have one hidden in the basement or attic. Outlawed, thought it be, it will only take on a new force and power that it was never intended to have.

Some years ago I wrote a book called, Symbolism - Smoke and Mirrors in Modern Society, and showed how many of our cherished icons are understood in different ways by different people.1 Perspective is the rule of the day for most of us. We have been taught to see certain things in specific ways. For instance, the Statue of Liberty is for many a symbol of freedom. She is seen by the immigrant as the welcoming Lady of the Land of Liberty. The French gave her to us and she is the symbol of the Goddess of Reason. Many a French girl dressed up just like she is depicted to herald the rise of reason over "superstitions of religion." Which is she? That depends upon your perspective.

Now that the Confederate flag is gone, what shall we do with the Stars and Stripes? The argument for removing the flag of the South was that it waved over slavery for years. Actually, if my sources are right, it waved over slavery for about four years. The Stars and Stripes waved over slavery for much longer a period of time. Shall we now attack her because she has waved over bad events in our nations history? Will she be the next victim of the, "I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings," or, "We don't want to offend anyone"? German's may be offended because she waved over them in Berlin. Japanese may be offended because she reminds them of Hiroshima or Iwo Jima.

I submit that those who are determined to destroy this great country are in the process of deconstruction as regards our history by means of media blitzes that sway the masses like the call of the sea to little lemmings. Much like Iliad's Sirens, the good ship America is heading for the rocks of destruction.

Let's not be so quick to side with what sounds good on the surface. My prayer is that we, as a people,
begin to think every decision and every action through to its logical end. The result of what has begun may not be what the decision makers had in mind.

Is the intention to help some people feel better about themselves or to remove every semblance of the real meaning of our national symbols? The picture at the right pretty well says what is at stake: "The Union And The Constitution Forever."

The rights of individual States to rule themselves as they voluntarily are bound together by the Constitution of the United States is even under attack.

Whether a flag, or the Constitution, or the Crosses and Stars of David on the graves of our soldiers who died to keep men free, they must be preserved and their story told to the next generation or we will cease to be "E Pluribus Unum - Out of Many One." We are an exceptional people. We are Free. "In God We Trust." We are diverse and many, but we are one. We are American!
