I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me. Psalm 57:2 (KJV)
I find this verse intriguing in it’s literal translation. The word “cry” is the Hebrew word, qara', which speaks of one accosting another in order to proclaim with a loud voice. This, then, is a cry that proclaims our need for help and a summons, or invitation, to God to come into our present situation or circumstance and handle it as He sees fit.
The “cry” is unto God ( 'elohiym), The Godhead Most High ('elyown). It draws upon all of Who God is. The proclaimed invitation is for the Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient God who, as the Holy Trinity consisting of Father, Son and Holy Ghost, is the one and only Creator and Maintainer of all things.
'Elohiym is the word used to denote One God in three Persons (an inseparable plurality). The verse then uses, 'El for “God,” which can mean, “a sacrificial Ram named ‘God His Praise,’ or ‘Immanuel,’ God with us.” It is indicative of “God, the one true God, Jehovah.”
This proclamation of faith in the ability of Jehovah to come and perform should encourage us to do the same as the Psalmist.
This “God that performeth” is our God, Who in and through the Person of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ, “performeth” (gamar). This word simply states, “He will perfect, perform, and bring to an end, in order to complete, all that pertains to the one who speaks boldly to Him. This idea is ably captured in Psalm 138:8:
The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands. Psalm 138:8 (KJV)
Here is found both the “cry” of faith and the “cry” of covenant mercy (checed) for the moment. Such a “cry” is always answered with God intervening magnificently.
