Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. Proverbs 4:10 (KJV)
How well do we hear, emv shama‘, the instructions of our Father?
emv shama‘, is a word that has many shades of meaning. It is not only speaking of hearing an audible sound but of comprehending and embracing the concepts conveyed by that sound. The willingness to obey what is heard and understood is also a part of the full meaning of this word, “Hear.”
Not only are we, as believers, given the power to “have ears to hear,” (Eze. 12:2; Matt. 11:15, 13:9) where the heathen and rebellious do not, we have the ability to hear with attentiveness and interest. We “hear” and actually listen to what we hear with the ear. This is supernatural in its origin; for, as Romans 10:17 (KJV) says, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
When our Father says, “Hear,” He gives His own the ability to obey. He causes His words to be heard (emv shama‘). There is also given the supernatural ability to understand the language of God and to discern the meaning as if hearing the case in a court of law. So, we see, that we are given the ability to “receive” the sayings of God by the supernaturally given ability to “hear.”
The word translated “receive” is, xql laqach, which implies becoming one with; as in being married to it, as though we take His words to wife. When we receive the words of God we are taking possession of them and making them a part of who we are. More accurately, we become what we have heard spoken by the mouth of our God and King.
This Hebrew word, xql laqach, also gives us the sense of being captured and taken away by what we have heard. The Word strikes our innermost being and understanding like lightning flashing about within.
Have you ever experienced this kind of revelation breaking upon you? If you have, then you know the joy that comes with knowing that God has spoken to you personally. If not, you are about to experience the thrill of a life-time as you ponder the sayings of His matchless living Word.
