Armor Bearers

And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the Lord will work for us: for there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few. And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart. 1 Samuel 14:6-7 (KJV)
There is none in the Body of Christ more underestimated nor more overlooked than the armor bearer. Yet, there is no one of more worth, more value or more precious than such a person.

If you have ever been in a fight alone, you know how vulnerable you can become if your enemy outnumbers you. I learned early on that if you were going to fight more than one opponent at a time you had better find a corner to fight from. The walls keep your back covered.

On the other hand, if you have an armor bearer, someone to “watch your back,” you have an even better chance of winning the fight; no matter how many are against you.

As Christians we have the Lord on our side and those that be with Him, therefore with us, are more than those that be against us. Elisha and his servant give us a picture of what the reality of that is like:

And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. 2 Kings 6:16-17 (KJV)

Many times, however, the Lord will let us move into the fray much like Jonathan and his armor bearer. When we do, the presence of that one whose heart is knit with ours to win the skirmish is of inestimable worth.

My prayer today is that you will have one who, when faced with the good fight of faith, will say, “Do all that is in thine heart: ... behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.” One that will be unswerving in allegiance and whose love will that of Jonathan and David.
