Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 1 Corinthians 13:7 (KJV)
By now you know that “all” is not necessarily “all” and that words we are familiar with do not always convey the same thought that we might initially think. The word “endureth” is, perhaps, another one of those words.
Endureth is the translation for the Greek word hupomeno. This word carries the idea of taking patiently, waiting behind, abiding and patient suffering.
We could say, then, that Love (agape) remains after suffering wrong done to it. Love will not, can not withdraw or flee when grieved or injured. This put to rest the idea that the Holy Spirit is so fragile that He will flee away at the least rejection or harsh word spoken. Not so; love never fails because it is permanent and strong in every situation.
Love will stay behind to bind up and heal every wounded one who embraces Him in His covenant of love.
Love always preserves and perseveres under misfortunes and trials so that the covenant believer may hold fast to their faith in Christ. We must not give ourselves too much credit where our strength in God is concerned. It is His love working in and through us that makes it all possible. We remain faithful, abide under the shadow of His wings and stay in His word as He draws us with His strong, unfailing love. Oh, our will is the governor (or governess) of our “house,” but love makes the impossible possible.
We are drawn forward, higher, in Him and will not flee, nor our love toward Him recede, because of covenant agape. While enveloped in Him, in Love, we can not only endure hardship, but bravely and calmly bear any ill treatment that is sent against us or upon which we chance to stumble.
Here, Beloved, “all” does mean “all.” “Love endureth all”.
